Deuteronomy 18:15-20

15 “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet. 16 This is what you requested of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’ 17 Then the Lord replied to me, ‘They are right in what they have said. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. 19 Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable. 20 But any prophet who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’

Jesus calls us o'er the tumult of life's wild, restless seas; day by day his sweet voice soundeth, saying, "Christian, follow me!"

Last November, along with 32 other pilgrims, and three leaders from The Academy for Spiritual Formation (a ministry of The Upper Room), Ruth Dixon traveled to a part of The Long Road Towards Justice and Beloved Community: A Civil Rights Pilgrimage.  Along the way, they met modern-day prophets who told the stories of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and reminded them that the struggle is not over.  It was a long road that was traveled, but not nearly as long as the Civil Rights Movement has carried us or as long as the road stretches out before us.  They were introduced to those who have found their passion to tell their stories, share their efforts to right the wrongs, to bring hope and healing to a world that is still hurting.

The pilgrims were incited to share their stories when they returned hom, and they also were invited to become a part of the work of the prophets.  Today, Ruth will share some of what she learned about herself and what she learned about civil rights.  She will introduce you to a few of the prophets she met and invite you to be a part of the puzzle.
